Bruce Grant, Master Shaper
In 1958, Bruce Grant was a boy living in Venice Beach, just down the street from Velzy Surfboards where Dewey Weber was the manager. Hanging-out around the shop, totally fascinated, the kid became known as "Hey, Shrimp."
A few years later, Velzy moved on, and Dewey Weber took over the shop establishing Weber Surfboards. Harold Iggy and Donald Takayama soon became part of the Weber shaping team. Bruce took full advantage of the opportunity to watch and learn from these three accomplished shapers. Little did he know that this was an education of a lifetime that formed the foundation of his talents as a shaper and surfboard builder.
Working for many years as a contract shaper, Bruce Grant was fortunate to be a part of and participate in the various evolutions in board shaping. As a result, he learned the special traits of almost every board maker in the area. He has honed his craft skills by shaping for Dewey Weber, Con Surfboards, Jeff Ho, Emotions Surf, Pacific West, Wilken, Unity, Hap Jacobs, Tom Overland, Blue Cheer, JT, Spyder and Tyler Surfboards.
Bruce has become an encyclopedia of surfboard making techniques and shapes. He has spent endless hours in various shaping rooms, tested countless designs in the water, and has received valuable feedback from team riders like Randall Kim, J.J., Rickie Schaffer, Dewey Weber, Bob Purvy, Joe Crimo, Jimmy Gamboa, Rob Belli, Paul Tokunaga, Josh and Ben Samuels and Jack "Powermouse" Ellis (to name a few).
Now, as the master surfboard shaper at Con Surfboards, Bruce relies on his 35 years of experience to shape the original, classic surfboards of the 1960's made by Con as well as hybrid and new models preferred by today's surfers.
